Senior Preparator

Under the direct supervision of the Exhibition Designer and Chief Preparator, the Senior Preparator will act as the lead art handler for all incoming and outgoing loans of the museum, and will assist the registrar department in all daily art movement of the museum’s collection. This will include the handling, packing and storage of these art works. Additionally, the Senior Preparator will be responsible for the construction, production and purchase of all packing and crating materials for outgoing loans and long term museum storage. The Senior Preparator will also assist the Exhibition Designer and Chief Preparator in the hiring and management of all part-time installation crew members, including creating and organizing the installation crew’s schedule, hiring for the specific installation times, and facilitating some administrative tasks related to the installation crew. The Senior Preparator will actively install and de-install all temporary exhibitions, while assisting the Exhibition Designer and Chief Preparator in overseeing the process and managing the prep crew, including the movement, hanging, and placement of artwork. The Senior Preparator will also be responsible for all gallery lighting and maintenance.

Required skills and qualifications: Bachelors of Fine Art in studio art or art history and a minimum of three years experience as a preparator in a public gallery or a museum required. Significant knowledge and experience in art handling is mandatory, including moving, storing, packing, installation, proper maintenance, and security of works of art in a variety of mediums. Experience managing labor and overseeing complex projects is also necessary. Additionally, incumbent must have experience and a general knowledge of exhibition lighting, audio visual equipment and installation, power and hand tools, carpentry (from rough to finish), exhibition case and furniture fabrication, electrical requirements, and painting.

Curator

The Curator is responsible for conceptualizing, developing, and organizing exhibitions of contemporary art. The special focus of this position is to oversee the Hammer Projects program and organizes a number of Hammer Projects each year. Hammer Projects are a series of exhibitions that focus primarily on the work of emerging artists, and reflect the Museum’s commitment to contemporary art by providing international and local artists a laboratory-like environment to create new work, or to present existing work in a new context. Additionally, this position is responsible for conceptualizing, editing and overseeing the production of the publications which will accompany these exhibitions. The Curator also oversees traveling exhibitions and coordinates exhibitions with guest curators. The Curator works closely with the Chief Curator, Museum Director, and other senior staff to develop programming for the Museum. This position also represents the Museum to the outside community, in particular with artists, galleries and donors. Additional duties will include administrative responsibilities within the Curatorial Department.

Required skills and qualifications: Extensive curatorial experience, particularly in organizing exhibitions of contemporary art and knowledge of standard curatorial practice and collections management policies. Thorough knowledge of 20th century art history with emphasis on contemporary art, and of the contemporary art market, galleries, and museums. Research skills to pursue independently exhibitions and publications. Basic knowledge of the printing industry as it relates to the publication of exhibition catalogues. Interpersonal skills to deal effectively with artists, collectors, art dealers, museum personnel, student, faculty, volunteers, and community members on local, national and international levels. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to organize, conceptualize, and direct a variety of projects simultaneously.

Print Production and Design Assistant

The Hammer Museum seeks a Print Production and Design Assistant to work with the Senior Designer in the creation and project management of design pieces that clearly communicate, maintain, and enhance the Museum's visual identity, and express the Hammer's position as a dynamic cultural institution. Primary responsibilities include managing the process (bids, scheduling, production and delivery) of all printed collateral for the Hammer Museum, from concept through production, including photography, separations, 4-color press work and digital production.
Secondary responsibilities include designing flyers, postcards, and posters; permanent and temporary environmental/directional graphics; public program and event signage; stationery and other identity pieces. Many design projects require working within the pre-established house style and project templates.

Strong project management skills and the proven ability to manage multiple jobs simultaneously, establish timelines and meet deadlines, negotiate with outside vendors, coordinate with multiple departments, and deliver on-time and on-budget results is essential. The ideal candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, including knowledge of Excel, Word and Outlook/Entourage. Technical requirements include the ability to operate a Mac with thorough design knowledge of InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and a basic understanding of Quark Xpress. Attention to detail and knowledge of typography, color proofing and printing processes are essential. BA in a directly related area preferred; knowledge of contemporary art helpful.

Exhibition Carpenter

The Hammer Museum’s Prep Department seeks a carpenter to build display furniture for an upcoming exhibition. Candidates must have significant experience in finish carpentry, including cabinetry and furniture construction. A firm understanding of assembly production and extensive knowledge and skill operating power tools, including a table saw, chop saw, drill and router is also required.

This is a temporary, full-time position starting May 1, 2008, ending after approximately six weeks.

Preparator, Hammer Museum

The Hammer Museum is seeking temporary preparators to join the preparator team for the installation and de-installation of all Museum exhibitions. Preparators are responsible for the safe handling of a variety of art works in the Museum collection and works on loan. Additionally, preparators prepare the Museum’s galleries prior to each installation, which might include a variety of tasks from painting to carpentry to audio visual set-up. Successful candidates must possess prior museum or fine art gallery preparator experience, basic knowledge of building techniques, and a strong enthusiasm for working as part of a collaborative team.

Summer Internship Opportunities

Museum Studies Internship (1 opening):
This internship is designed to offer the selected intern a breadth of experience at the Hammer Museum. During the summer the intern will work in three separate departments while also gaining insight in other areas of the museum. Details on specific assignments in the curatorial, communications, and registrarial departments are below.

Curatorial: The intern will be conducting research for the Hammer contemporary collection and on special projects as assigned. Duties include compiling artist, exhibition, and project files; drafting correspondence; managing various databases as required; and attending meetings as required. The intern will also present one public art talk.

Communications: The intern selected for this position will assist in compiling press kits, and in managing press clippings for the purposes of public relations and marketing. The intern will also update press lists and mailings databases, as well as maintain and update the Hammer's Myspace and Flickr accounts. The intern will help update content and images on the Hammer's website, and will be taught basic html and Photoshop skills if needed. The intern will help migrate content from the museum's current website to the redesigned website, which will be launched over the summer.

Registrarial: The intern will learn how to use The Museum System (TMS) collections management database, and under the supervision of the Associate Registrar will perform data entry of loan, exhibition, and bibliographic information to augment object records for works in the Hammer's permanent collections. The intern will also have the opportunity to work on registrarial projects for the Grunwald Center for Graphic Arts.

The intern will also meet with key staff from other museum departments, including Development, Public Programs, Art Preparation, Administration, and Operations, to gain a broader perspective on professional duties and possible careers within an arts-oriented cultural organization. The intern will also be included in all-staff meetings throughout the summer.

Development and Special Events Intern
The Development and Special Events Intern will gain experience in all aspects of fundraising in the museum setting. The intern will be provided with basic training in the Raiser’s Edge fundraising management software used widely by cultural and educational institutions. The intern will primarily assist the Gala Manager in preparing for the annual gala: tracking and maintaining contributions records and guest lists, corresponding with décor and catering vendors, and overseeing hospitality for event honorees. As a member of the Gala team, the intern will be present at meetings to determine the event’s creative direction. The intern’s summer-long project will be to research and draft honoree and speaker biographies for the gala program book. The intern will also provide assistance with membership fulfillment activities, donor acknowledgments, coordination of rental events, grant prospecting, and preparation of proposal attachments. The intern will participate in departmental staff meetings and will be encouraged to attend museum-wide meetings as well as public programs.

Terms:
The internship is for 10 consecutive weeks beginning on or near June 9th and ending on or by August 29th (will be worked out with the final candidate). The intern will be paid a gross sum of $3500 biweekly over the 10 week period.

Eligibility:
To apply, you must meet the following criteria for consideration:
• Be a member of groups underrepresented in professions related to museums and the visual arts: individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American and Pacific Islander descent.
• Be a currently enrolled undergraduate and have completed at least one semester of college by June 2008.
• Must not graduate from college before December 2008.
• Be a resident of, or attend college in, Los Angeles County.

If you have previously served as a Getty Multicultural Intern at the Hammer Museum or at more than two other organizations, you are not eligible for consideration. Staff members and relatives of staff or board members are also not eligible for consideration.
